Fans have been waiting twenty years for a third film, and Ghostbusters: The Video Game aims to fill that gap. While it may not be a consistently excellent game, it hits the spot by being an undeniably authentic and enjoyable Ghostbusters experience.

The game's most prominent accomplishment is its writing. The script is witty, sharp and smart throughout, which is hardly surprising, considering it's been penned by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis (who also wrote the films' screenplays). Bolstering the excellent writing is voice work by the original cast members, who reprise their roles here with wonderfully familiar and finely-tuned comedic performances. The story adds to the fan service by including several locations and enemies from the films, and the result is that Ghostbusters can in many ways stand proudly as a substitute for a new film.

Players assume the role of an unnamed, fifth ghostbuster. The game is a reasonably fun but very basic and typical third-person shooter, with players using their proton packs and traps to hunt down various supernatural entities.

While there is some variety to be found in different blaster modes to use and upgrades to unlock, as well as light puzzle elements and collectables to find, the gameplay itself never really rises above merely average, even though it does a fair job of making players feel like a ghostbuster. The campaign is quite short, but ends before repetition becomes too much of a problem.

The experience is extended by a smattering of cooperative and competitive online multiplayer modes which are fairly unremarkable, and the developers clearly missed a fantastic opportunity by not including proper campaign co-op. While facial animations have been very well done, the graphical presentation as a whole leaves a lot to be desired. The game runs at a distinctly sub-HD resolution, marked by mostly unimpressive textures and models.

Despite these flaws, Ghostbusters manages to be a fun and endearing experience for fans, and transcends the mediocrity of most licensed games. It might not be consistently good, but players wondering who they're gonna call can take a safe bet on Ghostbusters.
