Grand Theft Auto Vice City Grand Theft Auto Vice City

How big is this game? Even publicists for other games end up talking about Vice City when they call our office, babbling in the same helplessly intoxicated way that afflicts everyone who plays it. The achievement of Vice City (which, as everyone knows by now, is set in the 1980s and offers an all-new, Miami Vice-inspired story) is not only that it manages to live up to an absurd level of expectation, but that it takes the game places that fans of its predecessor Grand Theft Auto 3 never dreamed of, and that it achieves this astonishing level of innovation without losing anything that made GTA3 the bestselling PS2 game of all time...

GTA is brilliant, but it is set with a real world in mind. Sometimes we would just like to put down our pistols, machine guns and baseball bats for a moment and run riot with something else. Something more alien.

Our favorite alien, Crypto, has warped to the 1970s for self-enlightenment and has brought with him some new, fascinating toys. Old favorites like your Ion Detonator and Anal Probe have returned along with body snatching and taking control of human minds or bodies. Sadism is the order of the day. Once your victim's head pops (literally), you gain their DNA which is used as a currency to buy weaponry and UFO upgrades.

With the help of an ancient Alien Kung Fu Master, Crypto also learns new powers. You can stop time using psycho-kinesis to set up hilarious situations, freeze time, pick up a car and place it just above a crowd of humans. Or you can feed a Venus Human Trap that sends the civilians into a frantic panic, helping you conquer the world.

You can still jump and float short distances with your jetpack but there is way more fun to be had with the UFO. The UFO has not evolved that much in the sense of new weapons, but you can now fly by alert cops and military officers without being seen by tapping the invisibility button. Once you fire at an object your ship will appear again, which makes the new feature pretty useless in a combat situation.

Instead of following the previous Destroy All Humans you will now travel through five smaller locations and not just one or two really large ones. This begs the question have they scaled everything down on a system as powerful as the PS3? What was once fun has now gone stale and advanced since the last outing. The textures are very poor and everything just seems so bare and pointless. There are side missions available that just add repetition to a been-there-done-that scenario.

The Destroy All Humans franchise will need to retrace steps back to the drawing board as this is something we enjoyed five years ago. With Grand Theft Auto 4 and Saints Row 2 both moving forward in leaps and bounds, in this generation, there is absolutely no excuse for this stale and outdated game. Crypto has always been a nasty little alien and it is time for us humans to return the favor.
